Fizz in the Blue Room
I had another journey back to the future last week when I travelled on the Nth Shore line, past two of my old city abodes at Pymble and Artarmon. I also used my virginal Opal Card and thought that Pat Simmons would be proud.
I was headed for the Australian Writers’ Centre HQ, located on prime Sydney real estate, overlooking Lavender Bay and the iconic Harbour Bridge, a truly breathtaking setting. The Writing Chapter Books course I was attending, was in the Blue room, very appropriately named as Blues Point is nearby.
As I live in a rural area I have availed myself of many AWC online courses which have been great and the Magazine Writing Course led to a late career as a freelance journalist. I have also completed a Picture Book Course with Cathie Tasker and appreciated the opportunity to expand my knowledge of other genres.
The course was run by the prolific author Lesley Gibbes who gave us a wealth of knowledge about the nitty gritty of chapter books : length, themes, language, sentence length, paragraphs and story arcs. She referred not only to her own series about the dog Fizz but to many others to demonstrate the variety in the market and the vital difference between Picture Books and Chapter books. The attendees, all women of course, contributed to the discussion and had great insights. Lesley kept all of us under control as she has a background as a primary school teacher!
I would recommend her course to anyone and believe that she is running another one on May 16th.
