Hall of Fame!

I have been writing for more than 20 years and in the last 4 years I have focussed on writing for children.

I completed an online course on Writing Picture Books, with the Australian Writers Centre and that got me started in this genre. But although the process of creating such texts is full of joy and delight, it is hard to get a foot in the door, with large or smaller publishers in Australia Their slush piles are huge!

My enthusiasm has been energised by belonging to a number of Children’s Writing groups and FB pages, including Just Write for Kids, Creative Kids Tales, and Girl and Duck, where there is a community of like-minded and supportive writers. I have also had great support from my SCWBI online critique group.

Jen Storer, who is the ‘chief inspirationalist’ at Girl and Duck has also created an online writing course called Scribbles.  It encourages you to play, have fun, forget the rules and release your inner child. You can dip in and out the exercises, climb a tree and then come back again. One of the exercises is to play with a string of magnetic words and write a story. I did this and created a Picture Book text titled The Dry inspired by my experience of drought in the country over the last 18 months.

It was recently short listed in a writing competition run for Scribbles members and judged by Judith Rossell ,Gabrielle Wand and Lucinda Gifford. The winners will be announced soon. Very exciting!!
