I love magpies.

I see them in my garden every day and they have an ambivalent relationship with our old kelpie.

He doesn’t mind sharing but he likes his space too.

I have been down a rabbit hole looking at magpies and I am delighted to be reminded that magpies are the logo for the Children’s Laureate. The current Laureate Ursula Dubosarsky even has a feathered magpie puppet.

I am writing a very short Picture Book story about a magpie and a kelpie for a competition that closes soon. The prize is great!

And I have discovered that Magpies, which  belong to the family of passerine birds are the only ones that actually WALK! One foot after the other.

And they are great mimics…which the starting point of inspiration for my story!
